Historic Downtown Brunswick

Brunswick is a mixture of historic homes and new construction as the downtown area undergoes significant revitalization.

Welcome to Historic Downtown Brunswick

Revitalized historical town within the mainland entry port to the Golden Isles offers a peek into the colonial past and a thriving business district

Charming and picturesque, Historic Downtown Brunswick is the biggest attraction to the mainland entry port to the Golden Isles. Victorian architecture, colonial history, pristine parks, and many offerings make for a wonderful day strolling the oak-shaded streets. Brunswick overlooks the famed saltwater marshes and the illustrious Atlantic Ocean, and the historic district is brimming with a sense of grandeur and reverence.

Apart from the magnificent Victorian constructs, colonial buildings have also been preserved or restored with pride. Shops, galleries, restaurants, and theaters comprise the makeup of Old Town. Take in a show at the Ritz Theatre or try the world-famous Brunswick Stew at one of the many acclaimed eateries in town. Walking through the grid of plans and squares originally conceived by General James Oglethorpe more than two centuries ago, you'll feel as if you've been transported to 1771.

Brunswick is a mixture of historic homes and new construction as the downtown area undergoes significant revitalization. Today, the area is alive with the hustle and bustle of newcomers and long-time residents mixing it up at shops, restaurants, historical and cultural attractions, entertainment venues, and beautiful parks.

The recent revival has helped merchants thrive within the business district and offer a range of services and products. The Ritz Theater is a significant attraction to the area, as it regularly features live performances, exhibits, films, and plays. Pedestrians enjoy walking the well-lit streets or riding bikes along the paths. Brunswick’s close distance to the Golden Isles islands is a major draw.

Grab a nightcap or sit down for a hearty Southern Sunday brunch at local favorite Reid's Apothecary. Vegetarians and vegans will appreciate the variety of options on the menu at Reid's, with options like sweet and sour tofu, veggie wraps, and gazpacho being enough to make your mouth water.

A sunny joint serving American fare with Caribbean and Mexican touches, Indigo Coastal Shanty is a family-friendly establishment featuring daily catches and fresh flavors. Marshside Grill is another casual eatery with a waterside patio. Dig into seafood, hibachi, or a juicy burger while cashing in on one of the happy-hour deals.

Tipsy Mcsways is a neighborhood bar and grill known for its upbeat vibe and pub grub. You'll want to sample the homemade pretzels and fried potato salad! Tipsy also offers live music on the weekends and free Wi-Fi, making it an excellent spot to hang out for a quick lunch or an informal business meeting.

Things to Do

On the first Friday of every month, Historic Downtown Brunswick hosts First Fridays, a special day where the shops and restaurants have extended hours and serve appetizers and specialty drinks. It's the perfect way to kickstart a fantastic weekend.

The Mayfair Festival is the nation's oldest celebration of its kind and honors local fishermen and shrimpers as they begin the next season. Held across a full weekend, the festival features arts and crafts, food, and live music.

Music lovers unite at Brunswick PorchFest, a free music festival occurring one afternoon a year on the porches spread throughout the beautiful historic district. This event showcases performers, bands, organizers, volunteers, and more folks who band together to create a memorable musical celebration.

Since Brunswick Stew is such a big deal, it's no surprise that there is an entire event dedicated to it. The Brunswick Rockin' Stewbilee is a celebration and competition to see who can create the best stew as contestants vie for the coveted Peoples' Choice and Judges' Award. The event also features a dog parade, a classic and antique car show, and live music.
